Un-complicating Healthcare IT

HIMSS17 Notes: CMS – MACRA, and Open API’s

Apr 11, 2017 12:15:00 PM Posted by Paul Sliva | Sr. Healthcare IT Consultant

I’ll be wrapping up our HIMSS17 knowledge sharing series with some of my notes from the largest health IT conference in the world (yep, it brought in over 40,000 people!), which was at the end of February. Our ICE team went to soak in the education on behalf of many of our small to mid-sized healthcare customers who can’t attend themselves. Please reach out if you’d like more information on anything and I’d be happy to expand further!

I felt the hot topics at HIMSS17 were Cyber Security, Machine Learning and analytics, Cloud computing, and Interoperability. Below, though, are a few of my session notes on the topics of CMS-MACRA and on Open API’s.

Session: CMS – MACRA

  • CMS had several sessions covering MACRA and what it takes to meet MIPS for 2017. An interesting fact from the overview session was that MACRA replaces the CMS EHR Incentive program (Meaningful Use) for Eligible professionals (EP's), but that the Medicaid program is still alive and well (check with your state program). Eligible hospital Meaningful Use also continues for 2017.

Session: “Open API's: Crunch Your EHR Conversions and Legacy challenges!”

  • David Levin and Dr. Peter Chang presented a practical use case of migrating data from a legacy EHR to a new EHR using open API's (application programming interfaces).
  • API's are used readily in other industries such as banking, but are starting to catch on in healthcare. Their example migrated clinical information from Allscripts into Epic at USF Health and Tampa General Hospital.
  • Interesting fact about API's: Although FIHR gets a lot of attention, there are other open API's available to healthcare organizations to implement with their EHR.

I also thought I would share some photos of the massive exhibit hall floor so you can see technology upon technology lined up for attendees to get a glimpse of. We often say, "It's ICE Technologies' job to make all of that stuff work together for small to mid-size healthcare providers. That's what we do every day."
